WHY DIDN’T JACK CLIMB ONTO THE PLANK WITH ROSE WHEN THERE WAS CLEARLY ROOM FOR TWO?
It makes you think, doesn’t it? Makes you wonder if Jack is hiding anything. In fact, if you look closely at his jacket pocket, it’s obvious that he is hiding something: the pocket is bulky. Perhaps he intends to smuggle something into America. Following his conversations with the boatswain, he has concluded that upon arrival in New York, customs officers will proceed to search his pockets. And he cannot allow it because he would end up in prison. So a solution occurs to him: to sink the ship. Now if he had climbed onto the plank, he would have encountered the same problem upon arrival in New York: customs officers would have searched his pockets. It doesn’t matter if you arrive in New York by boat, by swimming or clinging to a plank: customs officers will search your pockets anyway. So, the most prudent thing to do is not to climb onto the plank but to wait and see.
