Crowds are riddled with paranormal phenomena. This is due to the accumulation of static electricity, which causes collective trance states during which the crowd can fall prey to the most varied collective hallucinations. In 1986, during a demonstration in Sydney, people saw a UFO from where leaflets announcing lipstick were thrown into the crowd. In Toronto, during another demonstration, the crowd had the subjective feeling that “a guy named Guterres has taken over my nose.” In the end, the police managed to arrest this Guterres and the collective panic was contained. However, in a crowded bodybuilding congress held in a Lyon venue, the rumor that hot chicken wings were hidden under someone’s hat spread like wildfire and there were avalanches, landslides and a tornado.
